During the 1950s, more and more people moved to Palmerston North.
A new Church and a new school called Our Lady of Lourdes was built in 1951. The Sisters of Mercy were asked to take charge of running this new school.
The Sisters who taught at the school lived in the Mercy Convent in Fitchett Street. However, the number of children at Our Lady of Lourdes School grew very quickly, so it was decided it would be easier for the Sisters to live closer to the school. A house was bought in Shamrock Street, and four Sisters moved in to begin a new Mercy community.
Mercy Sisters spent many years teaching at Our Lady of Lourdes school, and helping families in the community.
