St Bernadette’s was opened in 1962 with three Sisters of Mercy as teachers. A new building with four classrooms was built. On the fist day of school there were 85 students.
For a number of years, the Sisters who taught at St Bernadette’s had to travel from Loreto Convent in Papanui to Hornby every day. However, in 1976, the Sisters of Mercy set up a convent in Hornby and so the teachers St Bernadette’s were able to move there.
