The Sisters of Mercy were asked to establish a convent and a school in Ranfurly. The Parish Priest wanted a school for all the Catholic children in the area.

Sister Alacoque, Sister Bernard and Sister Tarcisius tarvelled to Ranfurly to set up a convent, and they opened St John’s School in 1945. The school was first set up in an old Church. In 1959 the children and their teachers moved into a new school which included three large classrooms.

As well as teaching in the school, the Sisters also taught music, singing and speech.
Most school families lived on farms, and they supported the Sisters by giving them meat and vegetables from their farms.
