St Mary’s School was opened in 1951, and the Sisters of Mercy were asked to take charge of running it.

Sister Hilary and Sister Gerald were the first Sisters to begin teaching at St Mary’s. This was a church-school, which meant that the building was used as classrooms during the week and then on Friday afternoon it was turned back into a Church for Mass on Sunday.

Finally, a new St Mary’s Church was opened on 1960, which meant the first building could be turned into permanent classrooms. Sisters continued to teach at St Mary’s until 1977.
