The Catholic families of Kaitaia worked hard for many years to raise enough money to built a new school and a new convent so the Sisters of Mercy could set up a community in their Parish.
In 1958, four Sisters of Mercy arrived to open the new school which had been called Pompallier Catholic School. These first Sisters were Sr Virgillius, Sr Lucia, Sr Gertrude and Sr Cyril. Sr Margaret also joined them as the music teacher to help raise some money for their community.
